Background of Nike Gyakusou
There is a fine line separating style and practically, when we think of activewear we tend to think of functionality before aesthetic. Over the past few years though we have seen this shift; Nike linking up with high end designers to provide a fashionable edge to running apparel. The collaborations between Nike and UNDERCOVER have perfected this.
In 2010 the idea for running gear partnered with high end fashion came to Nikes Fraser Cooke. With the likes of Y3 mastering the luxury sportswear space at this moment, there was still seemed a link missing out there. Founder of UNDERCOVER Jun Takahshi has a natural love for running, this helped largely when Cooke reached out to Takahashi to form a new brand focused around real runners. For Takahashi, running is a source of creativity, an exercise that allows him to conceptualise ideas for his next collection. Being based in Tokyo, he mostly runs laps of Yoyogi Park where everyone runs clockwise around. Going against the grain, Takahashi runs anti-clockwise around the park; Gyakusou means ‘reverse running’ in Japanese.
At the time most running gear was designed in neon shades - clashing with everyday environments. Gyakusou’s colourways however stepped away from those cliches, with earthy and natural tones. In cooperation with Nikes vast technical knowledge and Takahashi’s design philosophy, the collections always meet the needs of a runner. Efficient running clothing must meet many requirements, including the ability to perform in all weather conditions. The collections tend to very versatile.
A particular Nike x Gyakusou collection that stands out is from the Spring Summer 2019. Including a transform jacket, which allows a runner to pull over a waterproof section stuffed inside the front pocket. Paired up with running tights built with scientifically-informed knit that reduce seams and deliver targeted compression where most needed. Finally, complemented by a muted burgundy colourway of the Nike Vaporfly 4% FlyKnit.
No doubt the relationship between Nike and UNDERCOVER will continue for Spring Summer 2021. At the moment there is no scheduled launch date, but keep an eye on our website for any upcoming information.
